The kitchen of your home is where most homeowners gather with family and friends to enjoy meals and conversation. It’s the meeting place of most homes and needs to be equipped as such. Kitchen cabinets are a key feature of any kitchen, and high-quality cabinetry is a necessity.
Kitchen cabinets are one of the paramount features of your main entertaining space. They play a huge role in the first impression that guests get of your home. Plus, their functional role is to keep your dishes and silverware organized neatly. If they’re outdated or worn, they can detract from your kitchen rather than tying it together. When it’s time for a new look for your cabinets, we typically recommend a full replacement, but refinishing the cabinets is another option. Continue reading to learn more.
Cabinet Refinishing
If your home’s cabinets are still in good structural shape, they can be totally revitalized with a refinishing. It’s a very affordable way to get more miles out of your current cabinets and save some $$$. When your cabinets are refinished, they start by removing the doors and hardware. All the frames and door/drawer fronts are sanded down to the raw wood. Keep in mind, you canoot refinish laminate cabinets! Then they are either primed for paint or stained, then the final coat of paint or polyurethane would be added. The doors/drawers would be reinstalled with contemporary hardware. You can attempt to update the closers and glides with soft-close. The project can be completed much more quickly and with less intrusion. You know that your cabinets will fit because they’re your same old cabinets with new life. It’s a fairly minor home remodeling project with a great payoff.
Cabinet Replacement
More often than not, we recommend replacing the cabinets. They could be structurally compromised or no longer fit in with the new kitchen design that you’ve got in mind. Also, if you are changing the layout of the kitchen at all, you should be upgrading to new cabinets. Cabinet replacement involves the removal of the old cabinets and installing the new one. This isn’t as easy as it sounds and requires an experienced professional to get it right. Cabinet replacements are more costly than refinishing, but the benefits that new cabinets provide are worth it. New homes or a remodeled kitchen should go with totally new cabinets that you’ll be happy with for years to come. Replacing the cabinets gives you the opportunity to also address the flooring, plumbing, electrical and layout. With new kitchen layouts, you can get creative with cabinet shapes and color combinations. Cabinets set the tone for your entire kitchen; take the time to work with a design team that can make your vision a reality. Lastly, manufactured cabinets maintain strong warranties and the factory applied finishes these days are very protective and you’ll get a much higher quality result.
Replacing and refinishing can both be tremendous options for homeowners in need of updates to their kitchen. Depending on your situation, both can work and provide you with the change that you need.
