People love the idea of older and historic homes and transforming them into their very own dream home. Restoring an older or historic home is never a small project, there is typically special care that needs to be considered, but there are also surprises that can come up. If there is one thing that the team at Bennett Contracting has learned – it’s that if the project is done right, it can turn an old home into your dream home.
The Pros to Renovating an Old House
Older homes have plenty of character
There are most times intricate details everywhere you look – from the layout to the wood floors, to molding. Even with renovating and making the home your own, some of the details will still be there.
Old homes were built to last
Although construction and engineering have come a long way in recent years, homes have always been built with the thought of lasting a lifetime. While plumbing, electric, and the layout are all things you may want to update right away, the home’s foundation and structure are typically built strong.
Make it work for you
The great thing about updating and renovating an older home is that you have the chance to showcase your vision. You can change whatever you need to in the home to make it the home you’ve always wanted and a home that is truly one of a kind. You can work with the combination of working within the home that is a combination of old and new.
Our Home Restoration in Albany, NY
This young Albany couple inherited their grandfather’s house, with all of its unchanged 1960’s charm. In other words, everything had to be updated! The first step was the kitchen, which had Formica on every surface. Working with project manager Anthony and designer Justina they came up with this great new look. The vinyl tile flooring is now rustic wood. Bennett carpenters created custom shelves and ceiling beams to match the new flooring. This project included relocating the laundry from the basement to the first floor. It’s in the foyer behind the barn door in the kitchen.
At the rear of the home was a large family room, but it had a low ceiling and few windows making it dark an uninviting. Bennett removed the roof and built a new higher cathedral ceiling with large windows that look out onto the pool and woods. Now the room, which is just off the kitchen is light and open. Today it’s a great room for entertaining and someday it could be a perfect playroom for kids. Bennett installed craftsman trim (wide baseboards, casings and crown molding) throughout the project.
